Mistakes and missed opportunities lead to Sheps loss

BOX SCORE

The So-Cal Shepherds fell to the Ventura County pirates on Tuesday by the score of 11-4. This loss brings the Shepherds record to 6-6 while the pirates are now 9-3 on the year.

The Shepherds got the scoring started in the second inning as a Brandon Adams fielder's choice scored JP Hefft before the Pirates responded in the top of the third with two runs of their own to take the lead 2-1.

The Sheps would answer back and retake the lead in the bottom of the third as Shane Poe and Andrew Lujan both get RBI doubles before Rhett Stein singles in Lujan to earn the insurance run and take back the 4-2 lead.

The Ventura County Pirates would answer right back on an RBI single and an error that scored a run to tie the game up at four.

Errors would be the downfall for the Sheps in the game as they commited eight errors leading to four unearned runs for the Pirates who would gain the lead on an RBI double in the fifth and wouldn't give up the lead again.

The Pirates would score two more in the seventh, three in the eighth and one more in the ninth to make the final score 11-4 and score nine unanswered runs.

The Shepherds had chances to score after the third but were unable to cash in the runners as they had bases loaded with no outs twice and failed to score both times. In both instances, a ground ball was hit before the Pirates threw it home and then to first to turn the double play before recording the final out of the inning on the next batter.

The Shepherds will try to get back on track tomorrow against the Arroyo Seco Sentinels at La Habra high school at 4:00 PM.
